Watch the Fish -- Lower Stress
By Dr. Narinder Saini M.D.
Science’s quest for new ways to ease stress can take
odd turns. Consider the system concocted by Ultramind,
which depends on a cartoon fish swimming across a video
screen.
A spokesman for the Israeli company says the fish is part
of the RelaxPlus Personal biofeedback system designed
to bring calm into lives plagued by the ever-increasing
stresses of modern times. What’s involved is strapping
a plastic bandage on the finger, with a wire leading to
a box hooked up to a display screen.
The patient then watches the cartoon fish swimming beneath
the waves -- and the calmer the patient becomes, the closer
forward the fish moves to become a mermaid, then an angel.
Ultramind’s experts say the fish sequence is a visual
method of teaching patients through regular sessions to
lower stress levels, perhaps even permanently.
The technique, developed over eight years by Israeli inventor
Tuvi Orbach, has been endorsed by London’s Royal Free
Hospital. Researchers suggest that this could help conquer
headaches, depression and irritable bowel syndrome. |
