The Pleasure of Prayer
By Dr. Narinder Saini M.D.
What is prayer?
It is quite simply an irresistible urge
of our human nature to contact and communicate with
the source of love, energy and with our highest
spiritual wisdom and truth. We should ask when we
begin to pray, what is it we want? The answer almost
always is just happiness, love and safety for ourselves
and those we love. But usually we’re asking
for something else and when don’t get it then
we think that prayers were not answered. Actually
prayers are always answered but never the way we
expect.
The story is about a minister caught in flood.
The water is rising. A car comes along and the
driver says “ get in”. No the minister
responds “ God will save me!” The
water keeps rising. Soon the minister finds himself
on the roof of the house. People come by in a
boat. “ Get in the boat” No, he calls
back. “God will save me!” A helicopter
appears, and again the minister refuses help.
Finally, the house is swept away and the minister
drowns. He goes to heaven and meets God. “
what happened? Why didn’t you save me?”
he asks. God says, “ what do you mean? I
sent a car, a boat and a helicopter. You would
not take them. So pray like it all depends on
God and act like it all depends on you.
Any cry delivered from your heart is a prayer.
The important thing is to speak it in your own
voice, spontaneously and with passion.
4 Ways not to pray Here is
what prayer is not:
1. Lip Service Prayers Your lips move while your
mind roams.
2. Show of Prayers. These are prayers of hypocrite,
true prayers arise from a desire to be seen by
God and no one else.
3. Harmful Prayers. Such prayers bring no relief
and may hurt you. It is better to pray for the
enemy.
4. Fearful Prayers. Pray with confidence and
joy, making known your longings without concern
for how God will work out things.
